What separates well-built cabinets from ones that sag, peel, and stick. Use this checklist when comparing quotes.
Look for 1/2" to 3/4" plywood sides and backs rather than thin particleboard. Joints should be dadoed, doweled, or screwed and glued — not just stapled.
Solid hardwood face frames and doors (maple, oak, cherry, walnut) hold up best. Five-piece doors should have tight, even joints with room for wood movement.
Dovetailed solid-wood or plywood drawer boxes on full-extension, soft-close undermount slides rated around 75–100 lbs.
Concealed, adjustable soft-close hinges from established makers. Hardware should adjust in three directions so doors stay aligned over time.
A multi-coat catalyzed or conversion varnish finish resists moisture and wear far better than a single lacquer coat — especially in kitchens and baths.
Cabinets should be level, plumb, shimmed, and screwed into studs, with consistent reveals between doors. Ask about warranty terms on both product and labor.
